Bernie Sanders’ next challenge? Fighting corporate media
I tried being a little bit surprised by the election results like the majority of my fellows. My interest is piqued.
Wheeler said hes been a Sanders supporter since well before he ran for president. It’s hard to escape the idea that the reason Sanders chose to enter the race against Clinton – “The Clinton approach was to try to merge the interests of Wall Street and corporate America with the needs of the American middle class – an impossible task”, he writes – was perhaps her biggest vulnerability against Trump.
I had to mention the elephant in the room. To begin with, Hillary Clinton will, in the end, have somewhere between 1.5 to 2 million more votes than Donald Trump. “Is there anything we as a club can do differently?”
In other words, just because the campaign is over, we won’t have to worry about boring politics for the next couple of years. He had the heart and soul of the people in mind with his platform.
Upasna Barath, a sophomore majoring in economics, said, “Having a prominent figure like Senator Sanders stand up for your beliefs is so important and so helpful in a time like this where our country is divided and marginalized communities need love and support”. “That’s what killed Clinton”, she proffered. Some will argue that there’s no way a self-described Democratic Socialist would have won the presidency. Ms. magazine’s digital editor Carmen Rios concluded Sanders wants “the left at-large to take up the mantle of the white working class-erasing in the process the unique marginalization faced by women and people of color, who more often live in poverty than their white and male counterparts”.
Gilman said she hopes Clinton’s loss can have an upside, mobilizing liberals in resistance. “What I would have liked to had heard specifically is what we can do as a community of individuals”.
“I want to ask someone to define oligarchy, one of the young people here”, he said, later asking for a definition of the ramifications of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling.
Sanders has consistently sounded the same message of economic populism on his book tour.
Adele was quick to reply: “It’s time to open our doors and have a pow-wow together”. They are the ones who need us now. “Thank you for your support, but we have enormous issues facing us tomorrow. Mark my words, if a million young people marched on Washington and said we can not continue to carry this outrageous debt, you will achieve that.” Why?
My thoughts on the whole thing? Of course, we are NOT there yet, or even close to being there yet, but that should be the goal as we attempt to move forward after the electoral disaster of 2016.
After another Republican rout in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan carried 49 states, Democrats sought to give party centrists greater influence by creating “Super Tuesday”, a day of balloting heavily concentrated in conservative-leaning Southern states. And that’s not going to happen unless we have these tough conversations. As a candidate, Sanders’ socialist ideals didn’t exactly make him appealing to conservatives, but from the get-go he was the favorite of young liberals.
This ended the soul-searching – for now.
“It seems to me Bernie Sanders would have done better than Hillary did”, said Gloria Gilman, co-founder of the progressive activist group Philadelphia Neighborhood Networks, who campaigned hard for Clinton after she won the nomination.
Some interpreted the Vermont senator’s comments as a post-election riposte to Hillary Clinton’s invocation of race and gender issues in the primary – a critical part of her strategy to win that contest against Sanders.
When Bernie Sanders talks about the Democratic Party’s failure to reach working-class white voters, he manages to somehow forget he lost to a woman who bested him partly because she spoke of the need of criminal justice reform and the overall role racism plays in America before he did.
