Cyber Monday’s traffic and purchasing patterns underscored the extent to which the retail wars are increasingly being fought on the smallest of screens.

“Despite ongoing mixed retail and consumer spending trends overall, online spending appears to be a bright spot, as more consumers turn to online retail websites and apps for holiday shopping”, Baird analyst Colin Sebastian wrote in a note Monday morning.

That’s a 16 percent increase from last year, continuing to make it the biggest shopping day of the year, year after year. A total of 4,281 consumers participated in the survey conducted over the weekend. On Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday combined, $4.47 billion was spent online, a new record and up 18% from a year ago.

Fortune was able to calculate that figure based on projections from Adobe, which tracks around 80 percent of the online transactions that take place each day at the nation’s top 100 retailers.

The online shopping event this year reached $3 billion in sales, up 12 percent from last year, software giant Adobe reported late Monday, making it the largest online sales day in the United States ever.

“We’ve been planning it for about five or six months, we start planning in July or August for our Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales”.

Some experts say employees will shop an average of four hours while on the job, but Best Buy says they’re not that lenient.

Interestingly, Adobe reports that the problem of out-of-stock items hit record levels during Cyber Monday 2015. We expect Cyber Monday to be equally huge.

“I am a little bit of both”.

According to Adobe, 53 per cent of online retail traffic came from mobile devices, as did 32 per cent of sales. That’s compared to the eight in 10 online shoppers who said they will use their home computers to shop online.

“Orders from our store can go anywhere across the country”, said Store Manager, Dustin Mattingly. Of course, not all of that shopping was going toward gifts.

“People have become addicted to their smartphones”, she says.
