Betts’ 3 HRs carries Porcello, Red Sox to another Fenway win
As for the Red Sox, they’re 2-5 in their last seven Saturday games, and 1-5 in their last six game twos of a series. The Red Sox proved that they were one of them tonight, as the bottom third of the order knocked out five hits and scored all six runs.
Sunday’s game marks the second time this season that Betts has blasted three home runs in a tilt, as he also accomplished the feat on May 31 against Baltimore. NY had four hits in the inning against Ziegler, including a double by Jacoby Ellsbury with the bases loaded for two runs that put the Yankees up 3-2. The New Jersey native held the New York Yankees to two runs and seven hits in eight innings to earn a win on Tuesday – the third straight start in which he completed at least eight frames.
Pedroia led off the first inning with a single. The 27-year-old righty is the first Red Sox pitcher to begin a season 12-0 at home since Boo Ferriss went 13-0 to kick off the 1946 campaign. Holt hit his first home run in 64 at-bats since July 19 (sixth overall) in a two-run sixth. David Ortiz leads the Red Sox with 26.
While he was gone, fellow right-hander Rick Porcello, in the first year of his five-year, $82.5 million extension, burst onto the American League Cy Young picture with 15 wins and victories in nine of his last 10 decisions. “That’s a pitch a lot of times guys swing and miss or if they do hit it they hit it a little harder than that”.
Trailing 3-1 in the fifth, the Red Sox charged ahead with three runs that were keyed by right fielder Socrates Brito misplaying a flyball for an error. Dustin Pedroia was 5 for 6 with a double and two RBI.
The Diamondbacks did all of their damage in the fourth and fifth inning. They added to their lead in the fifth, with Bourn driving in Owings to make it 3-1.
Diamondbacks: Hale said RHP Rubby De La Rosa, who has been on the DL since May 27 with right elbow inflammation, is now not throwing after experiencing some forearm and elbow tightness.
Red Sox: OF Mookie Betts was out of the starting lineup after leaving Wednesday night’s game early with tightness in his right calf. Red Sox manager John Farrell said RHP Steven Wright’s right shoulder has improved and the hope is he can take his next turn Thursday. That’s too bad too, since Ramirez busted out of an 0-for-16 slump with a 2-for-3 night, driving in Boston’s only two runs of the contest.
One batter later, Andrew Benintendi, who continued his hot start with a 2-for-3 night, doubled off the Green Monster to score Holt.
Diamondbacks: RHP Zack Greinke (11-3, 3.67 ERA) looks to continue his solid run in the series finale on Sunday. Porcello is now 12-0 in 13 starts at Fenway Park.
Corbin is 0-5 with a 7.09 ERA in his past eight starts, and he hasn’t won since June 21 against the Toronto Blue Jays.
