Bevo XIV Passes Away in His Sleep
In honor of BEVO XIV’s 11-year tenure as mascot, the University of Texas did the honors of producing a short video with 14 facts you probably didn’t know about BEVO XIV.
It’s a sad day for every Texas Longhorn fans as earlier in the week we learned that BEVO XIV (the official mascot for the University of Texas) received a Bovine Leukemia diagnosis.
“Bevo XIV is a special animal”, said Ricky Brennes, executive director of the Silver Spurs and Bevo XIV’s regular travelling partner. He was being kept at a ranch owned by his owners and caretakers, UT-Austin benefactors John T. and Betty Baker. He spent his last few days retired and enjoying a win over another rival, the Oklahoma Sooners. Bevo XIV was 13 when he died.
In his time with Texas, Bevo XIV was on hand for numerous signature victories, including the Longhorns 2005 National Championship victory over USC at the Rose Bowl.
Sunrise Studly was the latest steer to fill the mascot’s role, which has been a staple at Texas games for 99 years. The steer appeared at President George W. Bush’s second inauguration ceremony in 2005.
The Silver Spurs Alumni Association will begin a search for BEVO XV immediately, and “focus on finding the same majestic qualities as previous longhorns that have worn the famous BEVO halter”, said the school.
The next Bevo they select will be on the sidelines for the 2016 season, including Thanksgiving.
