Beyonce Officially Has More VMAs Than Madonna

Accepting the best female video prize, Beyonce thanked co-director Jonas Akerlund, MTV and her fans, telling the audience to “have a handsome night”.

Britney Spears returned to the stage after about a decade and Kanye West gave us a classic rant.

The performance became more apolitical as the singer continued her performance. The dazzling earrings made of Colombian emerald, pink diamond and paraiba are valued at $1.8 million (£1.4 million), while the four diamond rings on her fingers total almost $12 million (£8.8 million). Her dancers ascended in all white and fell to the ground one by one as their spotlights turned red, undoubtedly a reference to gun violence and police shootings.

But that was far from it.

“I know that Beyoncé is here because she just walked past everybody and literally the earth stopped spinning”, “Girl Code” star Carly Aquilino observed to us on the white carpet. With a selection of her best hits, including “Pray You Catch Me”, “Sorry“, and “Hold Up“, the whole performance marked another revolutionary chapter in the singer’s illustrious career.

The ending of the performance was equally spectacular with “Formation” as the closing song. You could see a hint of a corset underneath the see-through slip.

“I’d like to thank my lovely daughter and my incredible husband for all of their support”. When it comes to Beyonce, composure is a nine-letter word.

West has had even more history with the awards show: He famously jumped onstage and stole Taylor Swift’s microphone at the 2009 show and previous year gave an 11-minute speech onstage – after being introduced by Swift – and announced he was going to run for president in 2020. And don’t even get Us started on that magically fresh face! Beyonce has to be in the top five at least, right?
