Beyonce’s Film Project About an Enslaved South African Woman Embroiled in
The Sun reported that Beyoncé hoped to use Baartman’s story to position herself as an Oscar contender, and had assembled a team of writers and acting coaches to help her work on the movie concept. Her brain and genitals were placed in jars that were left in display at the Musee de I’Homme in Paris until 1974. She died at the age of 26, but was not properly buried in her native country until 2002.
A Center for Women and Children under Saartjie’s name serves as a shelter for domestic abuse victims in South Africa.
While news of the biopic is still unconfirmed, Chief Jean Burgess of South Africa has offered her two cents, declaring Beyoncé unworthy of portraying such an important historical figure. However now a representative for the singer told USA web site Gossip Cop: “Beyonce is not connected to this project, yet this is a very noteworthy tale to be told”. According to Burgess, Beyonce “lacks the basic human dignity to be worthy of writing Sarah’s story”, and Beyonce should not play the part, reports the Daily Mail.
Beyonce was rumored to tell the story of the lawsuit Baartman filed during her life in order to obtain her freedom.
Her husband Jay Z has dipped into film production meanwhile, serving as a producer on Annie, The Great Gatsby and more.
