Beyonce’s Super Bowl show bringing both praise and criticism
Coldplay was the headlining act, but it was guest stars Beyonce and Bruno Mars that stole the show.
Beyoncé didn’t dance enough during the 2016 Super Bowl Halftime Show, so she took to the After-Party to really boogy.
Not only was Beyonce’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show incredible to watch – it was filled with political messages that ran much deeper than just the singing. Adversely however, as we saw with her Super Bowl performance, there will also be hordes of people who will continue to let ignorance blind them from issues that blacks face and the actual message of the song. Images honored past halftime performers including Stevie Wonder, Black Eyed Peas and the late Michael Jackson, whose military-style wardrobe inspired Beyonce’s costume Sunday. Even if Chris Martin and Coldplay stood out like a sore thumb, it may not have been the right platform for their music.
Now Beyonce isn’t one to shy away from making a statement – remember her VMAs performance in 2014 where the word ‘FEMINIST’ was proudly projected behind her in big, bold capital letters?
Opal Tometi, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, voiced appreciation for Beyonce on Twitter and noted that the Super Bowl fell on the birthday of Sandra Bland, an African American woman who was found hanging in a Texas jail in disputed circumstances after she was pulled over for a traffic violation.
With years of controversy surrounding the National Football League not paying the artists they get to perform at their Halftime Shows, fans have to realize that although these artists may not being paid, they’re getting more free promotion than nearly anyone could ask for.
CHRIS MARTIN [COLDPLAY]: I don’t think it’s possible. Imagery that evokes Hurricane Katrina, with Beyonce being submerged on top of a sinking police cruiser.
The 34-year-old surprised fans by releasing new single Formation on Saturday on Tidal, the streaming service she co-owns with husband Jay Z, among others. It is the most shared song in the past 24 hours.
The tour kicks off April 27 in Miami, and will wrap July 31 in Brussels.
Last year Beyoncé earned three Grammy Awards for her last album and her hit song “Drunk in Love”, so we’ll just have to wait for next year’s Grammys to see if this expected hit receives any official accolades. There was good reason: “Uptown Funk” crackled with an energy unmatched by any of Coldplay’s material.
KING: I can’t wait for the tour. There’s a little line in there, too.
CHARLIE ROSE: But the video is where the political activism is? Cleary we expect more from celebrities and athletes.
