Biden says he’s not yet ready to run for President
But at 72, Biden’s real moment has passed.
Tragedy has visited Biden before.
“I love Sen. Biden, but I’m already with Hillary Clinton“, Rep. Joe Crowley (N.Y.), vice chairman of the Democratic Caucus, said Friday. He considered resigning to care for his sons, but was persuaded not to by Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield. “It’s just a place you can go”. So he commuted daily between Capitol Hill and Delaware, a 90-minute train ride, to care for his sons. Biden tells crazy, shameless lies.
Biden and Obama aren’t just thinking about this as a possibility.
Mr. Biden has said ever since he became vice president in 2009 that he would be guided by his intention “to be the best vice president I can be”. Yet he has been prone to gaffs over his career. When supporters in the audience chanted his name, for instance, he responded, “Be careful what you wish for”.
Instead, their discussion focused on more profound questions of faith and loss, prompted by the recent death of the Biden’s son Beau, and by the 1972 car accident that claimed the life of his first wife, Neilia, and daughter, Naomi.
It seems unlikely now that Biden will run, not after this interview, where Stephen Colbert — the most gifted interviewer in America today – brought up “the elephant in the room”, which he cleverly suggested was really a donkey. And he’s acknowledged the difficulty of his family’s grief in repeated explanations about why he is not yet ready to decide whether he’ll run for president.
Biden told CBS “Late Show” host Colbert that no one should run for president unless “they can look at the folks out there and say, ‘I promise you have my whole heart, my whole soul, energy, and my passion to do this'”.
“[Beau] said, “Dad, I know how much you love me”. He has run for president twice before, but this time they have a tragedy to overcome.
Biden won’t enter this race unless he believes Mrs. Bill’s chances are fatally wounded and her big-money people will flee in droves to him.
“I imagine”, Biden answered, “that would be a hell of a job”. I’ve had a great record, I haven’t been involved in plagiarism. “Beau Biden, bronze star, sir, served with him in Iraq.’ And all of a sudden I lost it”.
It’s additionally somebody who would drive a putting distinction with Hillary Clinton on the marketing campaign path. His speeches on topics ranging from the economy to the environment are now major national and local media events, as reporters await clues about the vice president’s intentions.
At one point, Biden kissed a woman on the cheek, gave her a hug and said: “What people don’t understand is that anniversaries are bittersweet”. And Biden’s candidacy will also be viewed as a continuation of the Obama presidency, which has continually come under furious attack from Republicans as divisive and overreaching.
“What we saw was the honesty and authenticity that Americans are craving – it’s what they want in a president, which is why it’s so important for the vice president to run”, said a memo sent to reporters by Draft Biden over the weekend.
In his interview with Colbert, Biden sounded uncertain that he has the emotional stamina to mount another presidential campaign following the death of his son, Beau Biden. And yet, of course, Beau was also sustained by his father.
