Big 12 schedule not back-loaded for top teams in 2016

The Big 12 released its 2016 conference schedule Tuesday and there are notable differences in when some of the top teams play each other.

This will be the fifth time in the last eight years that the Bedlam game will have a direct impact on determining the Big 12 champion.

OU, OSU and Baylor all now have one Big 12 loss, with the latter having two regular season games remaining while Bedlam is the last for the in-state rivals. Nothing that has transpired this season suggests that will change by December 6. The Sooners, who have won six games in a row and moved to third in the playoff rankings, can clinch their ninth Big 12 title with a win Saturday night.

That possibility exists because of a fresh wrinkle in the 2015 football race.

How does that work, on a team-by-team basis, in this year’s title race?

Oklahoma State, however, suffered its first defeat of the season after riding a 10-game winning streak and fell to then-No. No other results could trump that reality.

The annual meeting of Baylor-TCU has found ways to deliver recently. They played well in a combined effort that almost saw TCU upend Oklahoma but there’s no question that coach Gary Patterson would rather have Boykin back in the lineup.

That covers the title contenders.

The Cowboys lost the first 11 games in the series and shocked the Sooners in overtime last December for just their second Bedlam victory since 2002. “There’s a whole list of stuff that I don’t know about”. With that record, Texas would not be eligible to receive a bowl berth in a typical season.

Now I just got depressed because I’m reminded we don’t have a conference championship game and that stinks. That still leaves room for nine more bowl teams.

Both players will represent the Bears at the Home Depot College Football Award Show Dec. 10 on ESPN. At present, NCAA rules are unclear on that topic. “That will be one of the things that I remember the most”.
