Big ‘Deadpool’ debut annihilates ‘Fifty Shades’ record, more
According to Box Office Mojo, “Deadpool” made $135 million domestically and $125 million internationally this weekend.
Deadpool is breaking all sorts of box office records as it’s set to achieve the biggest R-rated opening ever.
The record start is also a considerable feather in the cap of star Ryan Reynolds. We’ve had a good dose of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (although she is rather hard to place in the universe, since the movie toyed very much with her supposed character, ) so we’re expecting more appearances from other mutants, such as Cable himself. It grossed a little more than $1 million in its debut.
In its third weekend, Kong Fu Panda 3 starring the voices of Angelina Jolie and John Black built up to $19.7 million, adding to a $100.3 million haul. Warner Bros.’ “How to Be Single”, looked to capitalize on Valentine’s Day, bringing in largely female crowds to the tune of $18.7 million from 3,343 locations. The opening day ranks as the 24th biggest day ever, beating behemoths like Minions ($46 million), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 ($45.6 million) and Man of Steel ($44 million).
Deadpool laid to waste the other major film openings, which included Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson’s Zoolander 2 and How To Be Single.
Oscar nominee The Revenant rounded out the top five with $6.9 million. It should meet analyst projections of $21 million to $23 million in domestic ticket sales by the end of the holiday.
A sequel for “Deadpool” is reportedly already in the works. The hold is the best for an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks film to date; the previous film to hold that honor was A Walk to Remember’s 27% hold in 2002.
Final numbers are expected Tuesday. That’s more than Guardians of the Galaxy, a similar, non-sequel, Marvel project, accumulated from its Thursday preview ($11.2 million), and that was in August. STX Entertainment has every reason to cheer this modestly-budgeted film ($10 million), as it will bring in a nice profit. The animated film, which stars the vocal talents of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Bryan Cranston, has earned $93.9 million in its three week run.
The long waited arrival of Deadpool has exceeded expectations so far and the weekend is yet to be through.
