Biggest TPP hurdles are in United States: Turnbull
Under his government, he pushed for the withdrawal of New Zealand troops in Afghanistan and signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement with the United States.
“That seems to be the major domestic hurdle… of the 12 nations”, he told reporters in Manila on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
“That’s President Obama’s challenge and we obviously encourage all those legislators in Washington to give the TPP their support”.
The TPP is headed for a tough ride in the US Congress. Obama yesterday urged the 11 other members of the pact to ratify the deal “as quickly as possible”.
“This is not easy to do”.
Putin wrote that Russian Federation is developing its own joint trade agreement with countries like Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and said that deal was meant to be integrated with other regional deals.
Global Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland said that package is under review, as part of the Liberal government’s promise to consult with Canadians on the massive 12-country Pacific Rim trade pact and put it to a vote in Parliament. On the left, organized labor and certain environmental groups reflexively oppose TPP, refusing to acknowledge the changes that successive administrations have made to address their concerns. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the gathering of former secretaries of state wasn’t meant to send a message to Clinton.
Addressing the APEC CEO Summit 2015, Xi said, “Over many years the Asia Pacific has pursued great openness, integration and development, setting a good example of integration including countries with vastly different levels of development”.
“TPP is at the heart of our shared vision for the future of this dynamic region”, Obama said.
“Obviously execution is critical after we have arrived at the text and just want to once again commend all the leaders here for their extraordinary leadership”.
APEC, which accounts for 60 percent of global output and almost half of world trade, is aiming for a larger free trade area for its 21 economies by 2025, but a re-emergence in a few states of protectionism as growth stutters could be a hindrance.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership, as the agreement is known, is the economic cornerstone of Obama’s drive to refocus US foreign policy on Asia. The terrorist attacks on Paris on Friday that came as a crisis in Syria and Iraq sends migrants fleeing to other countries are also likely to be prominent on the agenda, as they were at the G-20 meeting in Turkey.
According to Mexican farmers, the TPP would be a disaster for local agriculture and could destine the sector to a total collapse.
