Bill Belichick: Chip Kelly’s firing ‘really disappointing’
The Patriots’ coach is also confident that the National Football League has not seen the last of Kelly.
Kelly, following his firing, moved to thank Lurie for the opportunity to coach “his beloved” Eagles and said felt “blessed” to work with a great bunch of people at the franchise.
Kelly led Philly to back to back 10-win seasons in his first two years as the head coach. As for Kelly, uncertainty looms; though he’s someone with enough experience to easily find a coaching job even before the start of next season.
“Yeah, I would say it’s actually disappointing”, Belichick said. “Chip Kelly, to me, is a really good football coach and he does a great job and has done a good job with that team”. “[2003], that was a good football team”. There’s a lot of examples.
“I don’t know how you build a program in one year, ” he said. At the end of the day, you know, I know why I’m here.
“Chip is a great coach”.
“It’s been one of the most disappointing seasons I’ve ever endured”, Lurie said.
“Yeah, it’s the best situation in the league”, he said. From ownership to the quarterback, things have gone unchanged since 2001.
Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will take over as interim head coach for the Eagles’ regular-season finale against the New York Giants this Sunday. He said it takes time for the team to get “acclimated to doing things the way of the philsophy of the new program”. Belichick and Kelly have a relationship that predates Kelly’s time in the NFL. “I think Chip had good intentions”. “You have to change the culture….” But there was an obvious disconnect between coach and players.
“He’ll hear what you’re saying or what you have to say”, Jenkins said.
With a new coach comes a new philosophy, Belichick explained. “It’s tough to lose him”, Bradford said. A lot of the players are going to have to change, in part because of the philosophy, in part because of the scheme. The coach that comes in usually has a different philosophy than the coach that left, so you have to try to implement that philosophy.
Kelly coached the Eagles for three seasons and had complete personnel control for the a year ago. I mean, look, training camp’s training camp but those games don’t count. Murray is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry and has been relegated to a shared backfield role with Ryan Mathews, who has proven a better fit while averaging 5.2 yards per carry with a team-high six rushing touchdowns.
Most of the former Eagles haven’t done much, and I think the question for Kelly is who he opted to go to in many cases. Can you tell that I think that was Chip’s biggest problem?
