Bill Bratton, NYPD commissioner, expected to resign
In that role, his primary focus has been community relations and neighborhood policing. He is well-renowned for his efforts to fight crime alongside Mayor Rudy Giuliani in NY in the 1990’s and for attempting to shift the perceptions of crime and police officers. De Blasio said the two would remain close, and joked Bratton would be picking up the tab when they went out for dinner. “We are farther along in New York City than most places”.
Commissioner Bill Bratton will step down as the city’s top cop, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced at a press conference in City Hall Tuesday afternoon.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -Mayor Bill de Blasio and Commissioner William J. Bratton came to Midland Beach Tuesday night for the National Night Out Against Crime.
“Bratton has been an advocate of the broken windows theory, ethnically diverse police force, maintaining a strong relationship with the community, tackling police corruption, being tough on gangs and having a strict no-tolerance of disruptive behavior”.
The New York Times points out Mr. Bratton was easily the most visible law enforcement officer in the country.
Bratton first became a beat cop in Boston 1970.
De Blasio swore “110 percent” that the commissioner’s decision to leave the police has nothing to do with the demand for his resignation.
When he takes over next month, O’Neill will inherit challenges that vexed his well-known predecessor, William Bratton, who announced that he is quitting to take a job with a corporate consulting firm. Before the ambush attacks on officers last month in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, New York City experienced a similar incident in December 2014, when a man shot and killed two officers as they sat in their squad auto.
“We will have a seamless transition, the most seamless in the history of this department”, Bratton said.
NYPD’s top chief, James O’Neill, is set to succeed Bratton, according to the Associated Press.
“It is now time for me to move on”, Bratton said after thanking his family and “this extraordinary mayor, who has truly been a partner, a friend and a leader”. He also was praised for improving the LAPD’s relationships with the city’s many diverse communities. As Chief, his innovative NCO program is not only making communities safer, it has brought police and the people together. The division will provide risk identification, prevention and response advising.
Through the years, Bratton has been praised for bringing crime down in Los Angeles and NY.
The man chosen to replace Police Commissioner Bill Bratton when he steps down in September said his philosophy of policing was first shaped when he worked as an overnight transit officer in gritty, early ’80s NY. Prosecutors say the officers accepted $100,000 in free flights, prostitutes, and other bribes in return for arranging police escorts, special parking and gun permits. But the platform goes much further – extending to climate justice, technology, healthcare and reparations for slavery. You need people you can trust.
In Harlem on Tuesday, black residents said they liked the idea, but expressed skepticism.
Sharpton said that he can not yet make a judgment on O’Neill, a generally well-regarded career NYPD cop, because he does not know him well.
Neter Rhoden, 14, said he would appreciate a friendly “hello”, from a police officer now and again, but is still upset about a time an officer held his arm behind his back while questioning him in the street. He said O’Neill has decades of experience and created the vision of the city’s neighborhood policing strategy.
Bratton has worked in the public sector for 45 years and started his career as a beat cop in Boston and also worked on the Los Angeles and NY forces. “With everything going on in this climate, it’s important to show appreciation for civil service workers”.
As for O’Neill, Sharpton said he does not know the commissioner appointee well, so he wants to have a sit-down.
