Bill Bratton to step down as NYPD comissioner
New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton speaks during a news conference, Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016, in New York’s City Hall.
Protesters gathered Monday in City Hall Park, before the announcement, demanded Bratton’s ouster and called for an end to police violence against city residents.
As tensions between the police and minorities have grown, the mayor, if he is re-elected next year, will likely be under pressure by his liberal allies to select a more progressive candidate, and likely a commissioner of colour. He said Bratton explained in the ruse, cops sent out letters to the perpetrators who blended among the other recruits.
Bratton found himself in the middle, calling the officers’ gesture inappropriate but at the same time noting that it reflected their feelings about “many issues”.
“We’ve tried to redefine our relationship from being the police to being your police”, Bratton said. During his first tenure, Bratton gained a reputation as an innovative crime fighter.
He had previously said he would retire from NY no later than next year.
Bratton left the East Coast for a seven-year stint as police chief of Los Angeles.
Tucker relayed his conversation yesterday with O’Neill, when told about Bratton’s resignation.
In one of their first official acts as outgoing and incoming police commissioners respectively, both Bill Bratton and James O’Neill joined Mayor Bill de Blasio to announce the expansion of program that will make officers a bigger part of the communities they serve. He said it’s just the “right time” for him and his wife.
“The protests were about 200 people in a city of 8.5 million people”, Bratton said.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo called de Blasio’s selection a smart choice for ny.
Global advisory firm Teneo has hired New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton to lead a new division focused on risk management. However, sources inside the department stated that Bratton has been negotiating an earlier leave for some time.
Five months later, two police officers were shot to death in their patrol auto in Brooklyn by a suspect who said on social media that he was avenging Garner and Michael Brown, a black man killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri. Originally from MA, he became police commissioner of Boston and first served as NY police chief under Republican mayor Rudy Giuliani from 1994 to 1996. There were about 200,000 cases of it in 2013 under then commissioner Ray Kelly. “And we are truly unified in our vision for safety in this city”. Blake had asked for an apology-something he got from the mayor but did not get from the commissioner.
The department is in sorry shambles, but because crime is down and the city is safe it’s not noticeable.
His announcement comes on the heels of a two-day occupation of lower Manhattan’s City Hall Park, where almost 100 demonstrators gathered to force a shutdown of the facility until Mayor de Blasio met their demands.
Lynch also thanked Bratton for his service in what he called “a very challenging period for the NYPD and its members”.
