Bills Beat Jets In Ryan’s Return, 22-17
The stadium was filled with a sea of Kelly green fans awaiting the arrival of Ryan and his Bills.
Carpenter added a 41-yard field goal to make 12-3 at halftime, then kicked a 29-yard effort midway through the third period after Chris Ivory’s fumble. From odd jerseys and rainy weather to fumbles and bad play-calling, the Jets-Bills game wasn’t the prettiest way to kick off Week 10 of the National Football League season.
There has been a lot of frustration floating around the NY Jets’ fan base after losing to the Bills Thursday night, and with good reason. Despite what Ryan said in press conferences prior to the game, on both sides of the field, this match-up truly meant more than just any other.
The one to Brandon, they were coming after us and I thought, get it in his hands, but it wasn’t the right call.
You guys can [relate] to that. That’s really what it feels like.
“Every now and then they call you back”, he said.
Buffalo’s Tyrod Taylor was 17 of 27 for 158 yards and a touchdown toss to Karlos Williams.
In a span of nine seconds, the Bills had turned a 3-0 deficit into a 9-3 lead. He looked like a rookie out there, feeling his way and mismanaging the second half. But since they didn’t, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson’s standout performance is a mere footnote outside of the Jets locker room.
This was indeed sweet redemption for Ryan, who spent six seasons coaching the Jets. But it was there that the Jets defense stood tall, sacking Taylor on the next play and then limiting Buffalo to a field goal. The Jets also gave themselves a chance to take the lead by pouncing on a dropped snap deep in Bills territory by P Colton Schmidt.
“We were at home and had four downs to do it. We didn’t get it done”. He went 15-for-34 passing and threw a pair of interceptions in the loss. The unit has more than enough playmakers to consistently put opposing quarterbacks on their backs and keep skill players out of the end zone.
The Bills still have question marks on defense. “We’ll see how it goes, but that’s the intention”, said Fitzpatrick, via ESPN. But the safety, who was picked up by Buffalo off waivers from Washington last season, deflected credit to Ryan and his coaching staff.
“We just didn’t step up when it counted”, he said. “I’m just here to make plays and have fun”. Ones that don’t – I don’t look at them as mistakes. They are as confident as they have been all season, but this time the confidence is different.
The Lions have not commented on their search since team owner Martha Firestone Ford said a national search began last week. You would think his absence would have been noticed more quickly than that. “We addressed that at the team meeting”. After the game, Darrelle Revis mentioned that the Jets blew the chances that they were given. McCoy had six carries for 31 yards, including a crucial first down on a clock-chewing Buffalo drive late in the fourth quarter that helped seal the Bills’ victory.
If NY doesn’t start playing better when the real Christmas comes, it’s going to be very lonely in Florham Park.
Aside from a few bumps in the road, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been everything the Jets had hoped: a solid game manager who doesn’t repeatedly compound one mistake with another.
-DL T.J. Barnes was waived Thursday, hours before the Jets’ 22-17 loss to the Bills. As the NY Daily News reported, one such person was former NY Giants kicker, Lawrence Tynes.
The points left on the field would loom larger later. He was the enemy – and had just sent them to a crushing defeat. But in two of their four losses, he averaged only 1.1 yards a carry.
Bowles again opted to go for it instead of taking the points, a decision that was 0-for-2 on the evening. “But we’re definitely on the right track, and we played with great energy”.
Notes: Running back Zac Stacy (broken ankle) is done for the year after being injured while returning a kickoff against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night. Buffalo trounced the Dolphins in their last appearance, while NY got a scare from the Jaguars but eventually came out on top in Week 10.
