Bills’ Cassel likely to start preseason opener
EJ fares well, Cassel the probable for CarolinaOn a night when the offense’s big plays were somewhat scattered over the course of 18 series, head coach Rex Ryan liked what he saw from EJ Manuel the most.
Ryan, who has been a big EJ Manuel supporter since he first arrived in Buffalo, said that he was pretty impressed with the way Manuel led the offense and took first team reps.
“We’ll see if there is any separation”, said Ryan. Bills coach Rex Ryan says Jacksons injury is not a bad one, but he will probably miss two weeks. “I really wanted to extend those guys because they are going to play the majority of that first preseason game”.
“Just to get to where they’ve carried the pads and hit on a grass a little bit”, Ryan said. Obviously we only had one touchdown, but when you go back and look that’s normally what you get.
During the scrimmage, Cassel finished 2-6 throwing for 27 yards.
Instead of signing Vick, the Bills traded for veteran Matt Cassel and signed former Baltimore Ravens backup Tyrod Taylor this offseason. “That was good to see”.
After stringing together several productive performances during the week, Taylor had the most disappointing evening. He beat his man quickly enough to run side-to-side on some running plays as well. The throw he wishes he had back?
It could be a while before the Buffalo Bills name a starting quarterback. He said Friday that he may keep it a secret until the Bills play the Indianapolis Colts in their season opener. Everyone knows the Bills greatest asset is their defensive line, boasting 3 Pro-Bowl players as well as Jerry Hughes, who added 10 sacks of his own in 2014. “We may know, but they may not know”.
He’s generally pleased, however, with how the competition has gone so far.
Ryan also revealed that McCoy has been held out of team drills for the past two practices because of a sore toe. Obviously, it doesn’t seem all that likely that he will end up winning the starting job right now, but the entire situation hasn’t gone as expected.
