Buffalo Bill Marquise Goodwin will be able to bring something special to training camp to show his teammates when he arrives in a week’s time – a shiny silver medal he won in the Pan Am Games long jump. He added that he has always dreamed of playing two sports and was proud of representing both the NFL and his country at this level.
After qualifying for the final on Tuesday, the former Texas track star finished second Wednesday night in the men’s long jump with a jump of 8.27 meters (27.13 feet). “It’s just my second meet of the year, so to come out with a silver medal is pretty good”. Prior to the Pan Am Games he had not competed in track and field since the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Rather than risk an injury and jeopardise his place in the final, Smith wasted no time in zipping on his Bermuda tracksuit as soon as he was certain of qualification. This year I feel like Im back to my top form.
Asked if he’s a football player or a track star, Goodwin labeled himself an athlete, but noted that he’s committed to football.
Illegal winds nullified several jumps, including the final attempt from Goodwin, who may have topped his third jump of the day considering how far he flew.
I feel like I still have to prove a lot to the jumpers out there, he said. Goodwin, who was cheered on by his wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, described the moment as “surreal” to ESPN’s Jim Caple.
Plus, I like that I don’t get hit.
