Bills Release Jackson, Name Starting Quarterback
Jackson made his lone preseason appearence on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, rushing five times for 48 yards and a touchdown.
Yeah, I know Jackson is a 34 year-old running back that is on the back-side of a great career, but he is the type of veteran leadership this team could use.
General manager Doug Whaley addressed the media and seemed to have a tough time fighting back the emotions.
The Bills acquired LeSean McCoy in a trade with Philadelphia and also selected hard-hitting rusher Karlos Williams in the draft.
Listen to Armen and Levack, weekdays from 3-7p ET, on “Your Home for New York Sports”, 104.5 The Team ESPN Radio, in Albany, NY. As the oldest running back in the league, Jackson should have been on notice all preseason for this possibility.
The Houston Texans might only need an extra running back for a month, because Arian Foster could return a lot sooner than expected. Boobie Dixon is going to be the team’s backup power back, and he should continue to have success as he did last season. In the meantime, the fourth season of “The Fred Jackson Show” is still scheduled to air live Monday, September 14 (7 p.m.), on Buffalo’s MeTV Station. He also had 66 catches for another 501 yards, both career highs. “Fred and his family have been dedicated to this community, and we can’t thank them enough for their contributions throughout his career”.
The Browns should be aggressive and go after him, because better teams that can give Jackson his first real shot at the playoffs are bound to be interested, too.
Not only has Jackson been a productive runner in his time, he is a locker room leader and a fan favorite in Buffalo.
Jackson’s salary of $2.35 million and his age compelled the Buffalo Bills to release him. Although Jackson is 34-years-old he expressed interest earlier this year in playing many more seasons.
