Biometric transactions to hit almost 5 bln by 2019
Apple is trailed by Samsung, Google, LG, and Sony in the top five, while Motorola appears in slot number 14, and Pebble way down at 20.
Their key findings suggest that besides the 1 in 5 not willing to pay over $175 for any wearable, consumers believe that tech brands are still considered the best type of wearables and that fashion and sports brands lag behind.
Only a fifth of people questioned said that they would be willing to pay more than $175 for a wearable device – interesting when you consider the number of devices priced above this level.
That being said, survey results found that consumers apparently want what they can’t have – despite reporting limited budgets, the research also found that the vast majority of participants preferred the Apple and Samsung brands.
Similar to the smartphone market, the smartwatch space is quickly moving towards a duopoly of Apple and Samsung, with more than three-quarters of respondents preferring either Apple or Samsung.
However, the research cautioned that the security of biometric data was paramount, citing the case of the HTC One Max, where fingerprint data was mistakenly stored on the device in plaintext and in a world-readable location. Fashion and designer brands like Nike, Rolex, and Ralph Lauren account for a tiny percentage of sales. Furthermore, with hackers merely obtaining tokens which are meaningless in isolation, the scale of attacks on sites might also decline. Juniper goes on to state that this is unlike fitness trackers which usually has clear cut uses, which is why it isn’t surprising that they tend to be more popular in the wearables category. Unlike a smartphone, battery life is relatively unimportant and only 4-percent said that a short battery life would deter them from purchasing a wearable.
Overall wearable device shipments are expected to reach 76.1 million units in 2015, up 163.6% from the 28.9 million units shipped in 2014, according to IT research firm IDC’s quarterly Wearable Device Tracker, released in September.
