Bitter cold replaced by snow, sleet in mid-Atlantic, South

Much of the region was still shivering after a bitter blast of arctic air brought record-smashing temperatures to several cities over the weekend. Areas of fog may also develop where there is still snow cover.
In St. Mary’s County 8 inches was reported near California, 7 inches in Lexington Park. The road had been plowed, but it was slick. Some roads, like Airport Road at Nonesuch Creek in New Castle County, are reporting water across the roadways, according the state Department of Transportation. State police say there was freezing rain at the time of the accidents but the causes of the crashes are being investigated.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The rain that has been falling since early this morning will change over to snow early this afternoon. Within this transition period, however, conditions may be flawless for a period of freezing rain, probably the most unsafe and most slippery kind of winter precipitation.
The high temperature in Milwaukee Monday was 27, 5 degrees lower than normal for February 15, according to the weather service.
In Mississippi, windows were blown out of cars and two gymnasiums and a library were damaged Monday at a K-12 school in Wesson where children were in attendance when heavy thunderstorms and a possible tornado crossed at least 19 counties.
