BJP Suffers Electoral Jolt In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar
Phulpur, similarly, is the constituency vacated by Yogi’s deputy CM, Keshav Prasad Maurya.
It would, however, be premature to write off the BJP on the basis of the results of a few Lok Sabha and Assembly by-elections.
Nagendra Singh Patel of SP emerged victorious in Phulpur with a margin of 59,613 votes.
Yesterday, BJP received a jolt when they lost sitting Lok Sabha seats of Gorakhpur and Phulpur to Samajwadi Party. Losing Gorakhpur was bitter for Yogi as he has been an MP from that constituency for five terms. The transfer of the BSP’s votes – it polled 23% by itself earlier – to the SP candidates reflects in the result. In several of them (EVM machines), votes had already been cast (even before the process of polling began). “Nothing is invincible and the results show that whatever Modi ji says, the Dalits, the minorities and the poor can’t forget the damage the BJP government has done in breaking social harmony”.
It is of vast political significance that the morale-boosting victory for the Opposition comes just hours after leaders of 20 parties met at Sonia Gandhi’s residence to draw up a blueprint for the 2019 elections.
Yet Mayawati has also held over 20% of the vote election after election. This government brought problems and led to fear among people.
Contesting separately, these two parties were subsequently swept away by the BJP during the Assembly elections in the state a year ago. He said that the party will learn its lessons from the defeat and will leave no stone unturned to perform well in the next year’s general election.
Despite a shocking loss in Uttar Pradesh bypolls, chief minister Yogi Aditynath is confident that the saffron party will perform well in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “The other Notional party has lost its deposits & relevance yet again”, KTR tweeted.
BJP will have to take the outcome seriously and not dismiss it as a mere defeat in a bypoll that would have no bearing on the Lok Sabha seats in UP.
“By-Poll results have given a clear message that people are angry with BJP for its arrogance and misrule”, the Congress leader added.
The SP won 47 seats with 21.8 per cent votes. However, with the RJD retaining the Araria Lok Sabha seat, he has failed the first test. The polls were necessitated after the death of RJD MP Mohammad Taslimuddin previous year.
The RJD fielded Sarfaraz Alam – son of Taslimuddin and a legislator of the ruling JD-U.
However, it was not all loss for the BJP in the by-elections.
It helped because both the parties are broad based strong parties in the state.
Since the Steering Committee will cease to exist after the plenary session, the new Working Committee (CWC) of the party will also be put in place soon.
The BJP also won Vadodara, which has been its traditional stronghold seat. He also said that the reason for the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gorakhpur and Phuphur was overconfidence. The coalition went on to form the government in Uttar Pradesh.
In 2017, for example, the combined vote share of the SP and the BSP was higher than the BJP’s – 50 per cent against its 41. The remaining two were won by the Congress. Congress came fourth in both seats.
Mainpuri: After a historical mandate in 2014, the first test of BJP’s popularity came in August the same year when Mainpuri bypolls were held. On 26 May, he resigned from Mainpuri and retained the Azamgarh seat.
