BK women observe ‘A Day Without a Woman’
Paola Mendoza, co-artistic director of the January 21 Women’s March on Washington, wanted to find out, so she organized the “A Day Without a Woman” strike to demonstrate “a day without us is actually a day when the world stops functioning”.
As I said at the start of this column, these are polarizing, unpredictable and stunning times, and there will surely be plenty of opportunities yet for women to resist, rise up and speak up in whichever way they choose.
On Wednesday, Federalist contributor Audrey Rabenberg called the strike a “self-indulgent day for privileged females” – a concern (minus the “self-indulgent” part) the organizers took into consideration when they came up with alternative means for women to participate in the Day Without A Woman.
By standing in solidarity with women on “A Day Without Women” in some way, you’re sacrificing to show support for your fellow women and acknowledge the importance of women’s equality in the world. “Our mothers and grandmothers fought for things that have been given to us, but now we need to take it on”. The organizers have a suggested “away” message for participating women to use at work. Typically, the school system has about 100 staff members who are absent.
Growing up, International Women’s Day was a day we commemorated in my immigrant household but didn’t celebrate, exactly.
Smart, thorough coverage of women’s issues throughout the 2016 election cycle earned Teen Vogue a reputation for savvy political coverage, and on International Women’s Day, that coverage is no different. The problem is, when women strike and close a school, it’s going to be other women picking up the slack. Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools has received some criticism from the community about its decision to cancel class, but Nash said the school made the right decision to close.
The Women’s March for Justice will be on March 11 at 9:30 a.m.at 600 East Harrison in Brownsville.
Elsewhere, the demonstrations were more subdued.
The historian Temma Kaplan revisited the first official National Woman’s Day, held in New York City on February 28, 1909. Women are also encouraged to wear red.
“What we’re trying to do both by striking from paid and unpaid labor is make visible the invisible”, she says.
Several hundred women in South Florida have gathered in Downtown Miami for a rally for International Women’s Day, Wednesday.
According to the U.S. Census, women make up more than 47 percent of the workforce and are dominant in professions such as registered nurses, dental assistants, cashiers, accountants and pharmacists. Closing that gap would add $12 trillion to global GDP by 2025, he said.
