Black actors ready for Chris Rock to shake up Oscar show
Many are predicting this, and I have to say that in all of the years I’ve been watching the Oscars, I’ve never seen them lavish that many statues on anyone two years a row.
The Revenant is closely followed by Mad Max: Fury Road, which received 10 nominations, and The Martian, which bagged seven.
Prediction: As a fan of each of these actors, any one that wins will excite yours truly. In fact, Spotlight is your real threat for Best Picture, both because its popularity will cut into Revenant’s presumed lead, and because its neutrality will block support for the non-neutral Big Short. Her performance was one that stood out while being surrounded by Oscar-nominated actors.
Before tuning in for Hollywood’s biggest night, take a trip down memory lane with previous Oscar award winning movie. Her closest competition is Rooney Mara who has gotten a lot of attention for “Carol” (which was unexpectedly snubbed for Best Picture which may ruin her chances) and Kate Winslet, who won the Globe for “Steve Jobs”.
Meanwhile, the Academy will continue its relationship with Chicago-based R.S. Owens & Company to service existing statuettes and create other awards for the Academy, including plaques for its annual Scientific and Technical Awards. Aaron Sorkin wasn’t even nominated for his screenplay, which seemed like a sure thing. On a more serious note, Foxx also discussed a recent conversation with Sidney Poitier, the first African-American to win an Oscar for Best Actor. One of the most active topics of discussion surrounding the Oscars is not about those who were nominated, but those who weren’t – specifically, people of colour.
As for the aforementioned screenplay nominations, with Sorkin out, it’s up in the air who will win for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The Actress in a Leading Role category is always a favorite, and five talented nominees are up for the 2016 title: Cate Blanchett in “Carol”, Brie Larson in “Room”, Jennifer Lawrence in “Joy”, Charlotte Rampling in “45 Years”, and Saoirse Ronan, in “Brooklyn”. It found that The Revenant had more mentions between January 4 and February 3 than any other best picture nominee and DiCaprio had a 16% larger share of the social mentions than Damon. The film won seven Academy Awards at the 71st Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Original Musical or Comedy Score and Best Original Screenplay. And Demchak and his colleague – Stephanie Minor – will be on hand at the Governors Ball, the Academy’s official post-Oscars celebration, with screwdrivers, affixing nameplates of winners onto the coveted Oscar statuettes.
