Black Eyed Peas – Yesterday
But in their new music video for a brand new song, “Yesterday“, (watch it here) they double down on their hip-hop credentials. It’s nostalgic, catchy and still very much on-trend – in other words, the ideal way to celebrate the group’s 20th anniversary.
Notably, the video also apparently takes you back to a time when Fergie wasn’t in the group. In case you don’t remember or are unfamiliar, the Peas existed long before Fergie’s arrival and their metamorphosis into a more pop/EDM/R&B-sounding band.
“Yesterday” samples a handful of old hip-hop songs, including the Beastie Boys’ “Paul Revere”, ODB’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton“. That tribute continues in the accompanying music video (below), which finds the Peas recreating classic album covers and shouting out their faves.
The music video features will.I.Am, apl.De.Ap and Taboo in a record store, promoting the vinyl for sale.
The Black Eyed Peas’ new album will be released later this year.
Earlier this year, Digital Spy asked the singer if she was involved in the 20-year Black Eyed Peas anniversary project that will.i.am had mentioned. It’s great to see the group return to their roots and pay homage, especially considering the massive success they achieved when they first broke away from that sound.
