BLACK OUT FRIDAY: Chicago Protesters Plan Black Friday Demonstration Over
In the days since the video’s release, there has been talk that marchers taking part in the Black Friday protest would engage in acts of civil disobedience, such as blocking store entrances to prevent shoppers from getting inside. The Tribune reported that Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and U.S. Reps.
Earlier this week, Van Dyke, who had been placed on administrative duty as an investigation continued, was charged with murder in McDonald’s death.
There was an element of the surreal throughout the day.
“The protest was a call for people to boycott the business district because the whole political system is involved: They sat on the video for a whole year”.
Numerous protesters said they felt hitting at stores’ bottom lines would get them more attention than simply marching.
The footage is the latest in a string of police shootings caught on camera that have sparked mass protests across the USA over the use of deadly force by police against minorities. “Let them just feel the empty cash registers”, the speaker shouted. In several instances, they harassed shoppers and store employees. In the one case (Ferguson), the protesters ignored clear facts that showed the shooting was both justified and reasonable; in the other case (Chicago), the protesters have the facts on their side.
Not everyone was enthusiastic about the tactic.
A Facebook page posted by march organizers said “the release of the Laquan McDonald video once again highlights the lack of value of Black lives in the minds of many who are charged with serving and protecting”.
“I’ve walked up and down the avenue”, said John Chikow, of the Magnificent Mile Association. “The public needs to know that while it would seem to some that the 12 months of investigation with our federal partners has taken too long, investigations of police shootings and misconduct are highly complex matters that carry with them very unique legal issues that must be fully examined and taken into consideration”.
Protesters outraged over the fatal police shooting of an African-American teenager -attempted to make their point – by disrupting Black Friday – along Chicago’s magnificent mile. Our focus is on the way the police are policing our communities. If they can not maintain professional courtesy with those they come into contact with, then this is what we get-a riot, an excessive shooting, and an officer in a classroom who lost his cool and assaulted a student sitting in their desk.
The important and united demonstration not only called for the conviction of Laquan’s killer, Jason Van Dyke, it also targeted Mayor Emanuel, Cook County States Attorney Alvarez and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. “Don’t go halfway, go all the way”, Johnson said. Police made a handful of arrests during downtown marches south of the Chicago River since the release of the video. Protesters also spilled over onto southbound Michigan Avenue, and traffic was eventually stopped in that direction north of the river as well.
Unfortunately, while the protest was largely peaceful, the protesters, led by the “Reverand” Jesse Jackson, used tactics that infringe on the rights of others.
“The path forward is to keep people united, to keep people watching out for each other, to try to teach people to treat each other with respect and kindness”.
The police-related events that riveted Chicago last week hold strong lessons for Kansas City and elsewhere.
The FOP also is paying the lawyer representing Van Dyke.
On Friday, after announcing charges against Corey Morgan in 9-year-old Tyshawn’s gruesome murder, McCarthy said he has no plans to resign.
The third day of protests were planned by such groups as the Chicago Teachers Union, Jesse Jackson’s Operation Push, some local communist and socialist party groups, and others in response to the 2014 shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
