Blake Swihart, Mookie Betts lead youth brigade to second

That’s what happened at Yankee Stadium tonight, as the Boston Red Sox went up by a huge lead only to be dashed to just two runs and then kicked back up to six against the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox did their part in eliminating the Yankees from the AL East race with a 10-4 win in New York, but with the Jays and Orioles getting rained out, the Yankees’ fate will have to wait until tomorrow. And boy, did they ever in front of over 38 500 people in attendance.

It is unlikely but in theory, the Red Sox could finish their season 82-80.

Brock Holt hustled for an RBI double and Swihart capped the outburst with a three-run homer to the short porch in right field. Holt challenged the weak arm of Jacoby Ellsbury and hustled in for a double. Oh, he knew during the game that people were already posting footage of his misses on a few smaller blogs like Barstool.

The problem was that the Yankees had other ideas. Mookie Betts took a slider into left field for a double to start the game, and moved to third as Dustin Pedroia sent a changeup in the same direction for a ground ball single.

At 104 pitches, the Sox starter came out for the eighth and began the frame by striking out A-Rod. The score was now 7-4. Porcello has split his four starts since last facing the Yankees and allowed three runs (two earned) and 11 hits over seven innings Wednesday against Tampa Bay.

Most recently, the Red Sox topped the Yankees 10-4 at Yankee Stadium yesterday.

The Yankees responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a Dustin Ackley 2-run homer.

Running from third base, Xander Bogaerts broke on contact.

Ortiz has 474 doubles with the Red Sox, tied with Dwight Evans for third in team history.

Houston’s Oliver Perez (0-3) took the loss after one of the two batters he faced, outfielder Seth Smith, singled and eventually came around to score the game-winning run on O’Malley’s hit.

Betts started the night and kept the pressure on the Yankees. The team will put him in the sidelines for now to protect against overuse. Also, Odubel Herrera went 4-for-4 and Aaron Altherr drove in a run. Since coming off the disabled list the final week of August, Porcello has averaged more than seven innings per start and compiled a 3.23 ERA.

Where critics overestimated the Red Sox was their biggest acknowledge flaw going into the season, pitching. “That’s a different team than we’d seen all spring and summer”, Rodriguez said.

Sometimes, the bullpen is only asked for one inning.

Pitching star Kershaw claimed 13 strike outs and only one hit as the Dodgers romped past their fierce divisional rivals to silence the home crowd at AT&T Park crowd and clinch the National League West. It wasn’t a save opportunity, but such is the life of a reliever. Wilhelmsen (2-2) got his first win since May 15.

Both the man and his amused, disbelieving female companion have not been identified, which is probably for the best. This necessitated Swihart’s earlier-than-expected promotion; after struggling to find his swing, he’s looking more and more comfortable each day.
