Blanchett, Redford take on newsroom drama in ‘Truth’
That same day, Cate was spotted heading out of Good Morning America after promoting Truth and opening up about playing famed comedian and actress Lucille Ball. The actress called the late comedienne “one of my all-time great heroes”, but added that the possibility of a film is still in its “early days”.
The star of “Elizabeth” Cate Blanchett may seem old fashioned, especially having shared her take on the “selfie culture” which has engulfed her peers, declaring that social networking often leads to “jealousy and rivalry”.
The Oscar victor also used the word “extraordinary” to describe Mary Mapes, the former “60 Minutes” producer she is portraying in her latest movie, “Truth“. The narrative centers on how the careers of anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) and news producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) were adversely affected due to the firestorm that erupted after a 60 Minutes report that questioned President George W. Bush’s service with the Texas Air National Guard.
“It’s every journalist’s worst nightmare”, Blanchett said of the fallout for Mapes. “Even though it feels like recent history, 2004…the media landscape, the political landscape has changed entirely”, Blanchett says. “It was at the beginning of the whole kind of hateful blogosphere”.
“Oh, the headbands have got to go, Bob”, Blanchett jokingly said of her co-star of whom she raved referring to “The Way We Were” actor as being passionate about his craft and respectful of the film’s director James Vanderbilt. At a star-studded screening in Los Angeles, Blanchett said she consumes her news via radio, such as ABC NewsRadio in Australia. “It’s a wonderful thing when you see your children becoming a pack and sort of independent of you and I’m very proud of my sons”.
