Blast at Istanbul airport, two wounded
An explosion occurred in Istanbul’s worldwide Sabiha Gokcen airport on Wednesday, wounding two cleaning staff, a local official said.
The explosion occurred on a parked Pegasus Airlines plane.
There were no passengers inside the jet bridge or the aircraft at the time of the incident and the airport will continue its operation as usual.
Anadolu earlier reported that one of the cleaners suffered a head wound and the other a hand injury.
The airport is the second largest in the city.
Sabiha Gokcen, which hosts flights both to domestic and numerous global destinations often with budget airlines, is now fully owned by Malaysian Airports Holding.
Police armed with rifles and protective vests imposed tight security at entrances to the airport after the blast, searching vehicles in the area.
Authorities arrive at the Istanbul airport.
Meanwhile the banned ultra-left Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) has also staged a string of usually small-scale attacks in Istanbul over the last months.
