Blaze erupts at Gap Inc. distribution center in New York
A huge six-alarm fire burned through a Fishkill warehouse that serves as the Gap’s regional distribution center.
The store ships to Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy stores in the northeast. The aggressive nature of the fire called for 23 fire departments from three counties to respond.
The fire broke out late Monday night and burned into the late morning hours on Tuesday. No employees were injured, although one firefighter sustained minor injuries. Investigators say the retailer won’t be able to figure out what to do until it’s able to get into the building, and that will be a while. A third of the million square foot building is damaged; damage estimated at more than $1 million.
At a press conference early Tuesday, fire and state police officials reported that the blaze remains under a joint investigation, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
Dutchess Assistant County Executive Ron Hicks says he is working overtime as local and federal investigators, including the ATF, continue to comb over the almost 1 million-square-foot site looking for clues.
The facility opened in 2000 and expanded a year later.
The facility had more than 425 employees at the time of that announcement. NYS Police asks that anyone who may have any information should contact them at 845-677-7300.
