Blood-red supermoon: Your pictures of last night’s rare celestial event
On Sunday night, the supermoon moved into the Earth’s shadow during a full lunar eclipse which was visible from the Americas, West Africa and Europe. Supermoon, or perigee moon, is the name given when the full or new moon comes closest to the Earth making it appear bigger. The moon turned a dark red color, which earnrf it the nickname ‘blood moon’. The rare celestial event is often described as a “Super moon” by astronomers and skywatchers.
The eclipse already will have started when the moon rises above the horizon about 8:40 p.m. or even a little earlier.
People interested in seeing the event can simply step outside Sunday evening to see the lunar phenomenon.
What is a lunar eclipse?
Earth’s shadow begins to obscure the view of a so-called supermoon during a total lunar eclipse as pasts behind a statue called Horse by the Colombian artist Fernando Botero, Monday, September 28, 2015, in Dubai, United Arab Emi… There have been eight tetrad eclipses so far, which is an interesting fact considering there was none from 1400 to 1900. Some think of the moon’s orbit as circular, Buzasi said, but it’s less flawless than that, which means the moon will look about 13 percent bigger than normal when you glimpse it in the sky.
That means that a supermoon is simply an extra bright moon.
In a solar eclipse, the moon is situated between the sun and Earth, effectively preventing sunlight from reaching the planet. The last supermoon eclipse was in 1982 and the next one will be in 2033. Sure enough, the Arawaks were astounded to see the eclipse, and followed everything Columbus said from that point on. But it doesn’t totally shade the moon, some light with longer wavelengths passes through Earth’s atmosphere thanks to refraction and the moon appears reddish.
