Blue Jays’ Encarnacion out after dropping appeal
Edwin Encarnacion’s three-run home run helped the Toronto Blue Jays blank the Detroit Tigers 6-0 on Friday night at Rogers Centre.
TORONTO (AP) – Aaron Sanchez didn’t have his All-Star stuff on Saturday.
Blue Jays: Donaldson started at DH for the second straight day, with Darwin Barney at 3B.
With their 6-1 win at Rogers Centre against the Detroit Tigers, Toronto secured its 51st victory of 2016, the most at the midway point of the season by a Blue Jays team since the 1992 World Series championship squad.
“It’s great to see so many guys contribute”, Dickey said. They have already clinched a winning record on a grueling 11-game road trip that covered a few tough venues (not to mention a long flight to Florida and a trip north of the border).
Sanchez is 9-1 with a 2.97 ERA and has not lost since April 22 against Oakland.
Blue Jays: OF Jose Bautista (left big toe) has begun hitting off a tee, manager John Gibbons said.
“I think the 80 runs, that has something to do with the guys behind me driving me in”, Donaldson said. But in the same inning, pitcher Joe Biagini threw to second with Kinsler attempting a steal and threw the ball away to centre, allowing Kinsler to get to third.
Sanchez surrendered two earned runs on five hits before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Devon Travis erased a 2-1 deficit in the seventh taking Bruce Rondon’s 2-2 slider over the wall in left for his sixth home run of the season. With how the first two games in this series had gone, it was arguably their biggest win of the season.
BALTIMORE – Jonathan Schoop lined a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning for the key hit in Baltimore’s win. He faced the Jays earlier this season on June 7 at Comerica Park and received a no decision after giving up one run on three hits and five walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start in place of Daniel Norris, who has a strained right oblique. “He did exactly what we needed him to do”.
– It could have been worse, as Sanchez got a double play before leaving runners on the corners in the third inning.
With Victor Martinez at third in a scoreless game, Ezequiel Carrera caught a line drive off the bat of Steven Moya in the second and fired a bullet into Russell Martin‘s glove to nail Martinez and keep the Tigers off the board.
Saltalamacchia made it 2-0 in the fourth with a two-out RBI single.
The Blue Jays have five All-Stars for the third time in team history.
Toronto’s defense delivered a couple highlight-reel plays. What he did against the Blue Jays was surprising, yes, but not jaw-dropping.
He was acquired by Toronto in a trade with Seattle ahead of the 2015 season but was forced to sit out all but nine games past year with knee injuries. There is no timetable for his return….
The 33-year-old Encarnacion was originally suspended on July 3 after he made contact with home plate umpire Vic Carapazza while arguing balls and strikes in a 19-inning loss to the Cleveland Indians on July 1.
Dickey, who now owns a 9-3 career record against Detroit, despite allowing 20 home runs, was visited on the mound by Toronto’s head trainer George Poulis for a fingernail issue after walking the Tigers’ No. 8 hitter, James McCann, in the seventh, but he stayed in the game and managed to entice two flyball outs to end the inning.
