Blue Jays’ Josh Donaldson voted into Major League Baseball all-star game
Josh Donaldson is headed to MLB’s all-star game.
It’s not uncommon for players having the best season when voting concludes to not place first in the final tally, though this year’s ballot was especially heinous.
Donaldson broke the record for All-Star votes with 14,090,188 this year and will start for the American League July 14 in Cincinnati. After getting celebrity backing from “Arrow” star Stephen Amell and Canadian hockey icon Don Cherry and making a spectacular fielding play that had him all over the sports-highlight shows, Donaldson shot past Moustakas to the top of the All-Star voting.
Josh Donaldson ripped his 20th home run of the season, but the Blue Jays suffered a 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Monday. But now that the Jays have another perennially productive bat at the heart of the order and a sure-handed glove at third, Anthopoulos can focus all his efforts on acquiring a quality starter before the upcoming trade deadline. He is fourth among AL players and first among outfielders with a. 397 on-base percentage.
The other players in the AL All-Star lineup are Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, Anaheim Angels outfielder Mike Trout and Seattle Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz.
When there’s a twinge of disappointment that your team has only four starters on the American League All-Star team, it’s a sign of how far a once-struggling franchise has come in a very short time.
Four players from Kansas City were selected.
But one fan choice – injured outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (Miami) – will not be able to play due to a wrist fracture, while another outfielder, Matt Holliday (St Louis) is doubtful.
Bruce Bochy of the Giants will manage the National League.
After noticing some severe inflation with the Royals votes, the league opted to nullify between 60 and 65 million votes in June.
Each fan could cast up to 35 ballots in online voting.
