Blue Jays trade ambidextrous pitcher Pat Venditte to Mariners
The Mariners made waiver claims on the two players, as it is necessary for players to go through the waiver wire to be traded now that the August 1 non-waiver trade deadline has passed.
Venditte, 31, was the first truly ambidextrous pitcher to play in the major leagues. “We needed some help”.
The Mariners acquired the 31-year-old relief pitcher for a player to be named later, according to MLB.com reporter Greg Johns. Even being limited to a LOOGY (Lefty One-Out Guy) role would be ideal for Venditte since right-handed hitters own a.346 batting average and a 1.118 OPS when he pitches left-handed. Right-hander Taijuan Walker took Parker’s spot on the 25-man roster when he was activated from the disabled list to make the start Saturday night. They also designated RHP Donn Roach to make room for Venditte.
Caminero, who is out of minor-league options, is expected to join the Mariners on Monday.
House, 26, has spent most of the 2016 season at Columbus, posting a record of 4-3 with one save and a 4.23 ERA over 66 innings in 26 games (12 starts). In his last 21 outings, he had a 2.13 ERA over 25 1/3 innings with 19 strikeouts since May 24.
He’s got a fastball that can touch triple digits and routinely sits around 98-99 miles per hour with a power slider. There’s a way to use this. Venditte had been playing with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons as a reliever and emergency starter. Venditte owns a career 2-2 record with a 4.58 ERA.
The Cleveland Indians recalled left-handed pitcher TJ House from Columbus and optioned left-hander Shawn Morimando to the Triple-A club. Caminero came to the Pirates from Miami, where he had a history of good velocity combined with control problems.
Caminero went 1-2 with one save and a 3.51 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 39 relief appearances with the Pirates. He was signed in 2005 by the Marlins as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic. He posted a 5.19 ERA in eight relief efforts with Toronto this season.
