Blue Moon Diamond sells for a new world record at auction
The Sotheby’s blue diamond, which goes under the hammer on Wednesday, has been tipped as a world record-beater, with the auction house listing its projected sale price at $35-$55m.
And, since the diamond is mounted as a ring, it has also set a new world record for any jewel.
It is the largest cushion-shaped stone classified in the elite “fancy vivid” category – which is only applied to 1 in 100,000 stones – to ever come to auction.
“So even among this extremely rare class of blue diamonds, to get one vivid blue, 12 carats, internally flawless, is once in a blue moon”, he said. I’ve by no means seen a extra lovely stone – its form, color and purity.
A Hong Kong bidder is reported to have renamed their purchase “The Sweet Josephine”.
The Blue Moon – so-called in reference to its rarity, playing off the expression “once in a blue moon” – topped the previous record of $46.2 million set five years ago by the Graff Pink, Sotheby’s said. The vendor was New York-based mostly jeweller Cora worldwide, in accordance with Sotheby’s.
“For me the Blue Moon was always the blue diamond of my career”.
The distinctive blue color in diamonds is attributed to hint quantities of the factor boron within the crystal construction.
The Blue Moon Diamond was discovered in January 2014 at the historic Cullinan mine in South Africa. “It’s like the most secret part of the earth has just been shown to us”, Bennett said.
Christie’s puts its prized jewel up for sale on Tuesday. Its estimate was $4.7 million-$5.3 million. Its estimated pre-sale price is between 21 million and 27 million Swiss francs ($23-28 million).
