BMW 8 Series revival planned for 2020
The Series 8 model is planned to arrive by 2020 and is part of moves to provide greater competition to long-time adversaries.
This new entry has been speculated to be based on the next-gen 7-Series, though some have thought it would replace the 6-Series.
A new report claims that BMW is planning to resurrect the 8 Series as a pinnacle luxury auto to fight the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Regardless of which proposal wins out, the new 8 Series will be pitched against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe and the Bentley Continental GT.
BMW seems to be well on track to reviving its 8 Series nameplate.
Both of these proposals will use the latest-generation 7 Series sedan as its basis.
Harald Krueger, chairman of the BMW Group, is reportedly keen for the brand to expand its lineup with more high-end luxury models where profit margins are exceptionally robust.
Krueger is personally overlooking the plans to extend the BMW line-up. Having an additional model for BMW to compete with the S Class Coupe would help considerably, as without one, BMW is losing potential sales with every single S Class Coupe sold. The other is a proper two-door model like the Grand Lusso Coupe (pictured here) which will have a cabriolet counterpart. The layout of the 8 Series will be finalized by BMW in 2018 and a concept will be showcased the same year. Now BMW has officially announced the revival itself.
