BOA monitoring Zika virus outbreak amid warnings from World Health Organization
The first cases of the Zika virus in New Zealand for 2016 were revealed today with nine cases confirmed by the Ministry of Health.
“We will also continue to monitor the situation on the ground in Rio over the coming months, staying in close contact with Rio 2016, the International Olympic Committee and our contacts at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office”.
“The Olympic games will take place during the Brazilian winter so at that time we will have different climate conditions than there are now, when we are in the middle of the Brazilian summer”, he said, adding that the IOC was working in “close cooperation” with Brazilian authorities.
The Centers for Disease Control is advising women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant to consider postponing travel to areas impacted by the virus, which may be linked to microcephaly, a birth defect resulting in a small head.
The IOC noted that plans had already been put in place by Brazilian organizers for daily inspection of Olympic venues to remove any puddles of stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.
In a statement released on Friday, the New Zealand Olympic Committee said they would provide government advice to team members.
“At the same time, National Olympic Committees should consult with their national health authorities to get advice and guidance”, it said in its note to NOCs and worldwide sports federations.
According to International Organization for Migration, more than one million refugees and migrants crossed into Europe in 2015 – with the majority of people arriving by boats.
Speaking to reporters in Switzerland, Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri said the lack of immunity to the virus and the fact the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that spread it can be found nearly “everywhere in the Americas” – except for Canada and Chile – “explains the speed” of its development. Sailors have complained angrily about competing in the city’s sewage-infested bay. Clashes have broken out over evictions to make way for Olympic projects.
Athletes who have already been identified include a Syrian swimmer who is training in Germany, a Congolese judoka in Brazil, and an Iranian taekwondo athlete in Belgium, announced the IOC.
In the United States, at least six people have tested positive for the Zika virus in New York, Arkansas and Virginia.
Sports Traveler, a sports-centric tourism company based in Chicago, has been selling travel packages to the Olympics since May. “The Olympics is about families”.
The big question is whether Zika is responsible for the huge increase in birth defects reported by doctors, hospitals and other medical officials in Brazil over the last few months.
