Bob Graham tells Florida delegates Debbie Wasserman Schultz ‘deserves our recognition’
Wasserman Schultz, a member of Congress from Florida who reportedly had been removed from a speaking role after the email leak, said she would address the delegates during the convention.
A spokesman for the Alaska Democratic party says the party did not have any plants among Bernie Sanders’ supporters ahead of an event earlier this year with Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Wasserman Schultz is such a fixture in Florida politics that Canova is the first primary opponent she’s faced since being elected to the U.S. House in 2004.
On Sunday, she stepped down as DNC chair on the eve of the convention kick-off in the City of Brotherly Love.
The controversy overshadowed preparations in Philadelphia for the four-day coronation of Clinton as the Democratic nominee to face Trump in the November 8 White House election.
In a CNN interview, the Vermont senator called the comments in the emails “outrageous”, but said he was not shocked by them, adding “It’s what we talked about six months ago, that the (Democratic National Committee) was supporting Hillary Clinton and was opposed to my campaign”.
The Republican presidential nominee was reacting a day after Democrat Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager accused “Russian state actors” of breaking into the DNC’s emails to boost Trump. “What the grassroots has done for me – I’m so thankful”, he said.
Liberal groups and Sanders supporters were dismayed by the pick of Kaine, who could appeal to independents and moderates but has never been aligned with party liberals. That appeal elicited boos and some cheers, as delegates shouted, “We want Bernie!” Before Schultz even began to speak she was drowned out by a swell of boos. The WikiLeaks exposure only seemed to confirm what Sanders and his supporters have been accusing Debbie Wasserman Schultz of all along. But in recent weeks – after the Trump campaign lifted an image from an alt-right feed with a six-point star and a pile of cash – Democrats, including Wasserman Schultz, have stepped up their focus on the issue of anti-Semitism.
Supporters of Mr. Sanders had long complained the party unfairly favored Mrs. Clinton when they should have remained neutral. He said that reading the emails “was really disappointing” for many at the DNC, who “though we were better than that”.
Donald Trump has shown he wouldn’t care. It’s also important to note that, contrary to previous reports from CNN and others, Wasserman Schultz will still open and close the convention and speak to the delegates.
Trump also castigated Clinton for picking Virginia Sen.
“We knew they were stacking the deck against Bernie from the get-go, but this type of stuff coming out is outrageous”, he said.
Even Brian Fallon, Hillary For America’s national press secretary, told a media briefing on Monday morning: “We anticipate there will be a roll call vote tomorrow night and that every vote will be counted”.
Mook said the speeches would be optimistic, offering ideas for helping people and showcasing Clinton’s lifelong commitment to public service.
