Bob Seger reveals Glenn Frey had been in a hospital for months
Frey died Monday at 67. The Recording Academy gave them a Grammy award for best country performance by a duo or group with vocals for Souther’s song, “How Long”, and a Grammy award for best pop instrumental performance for Frey’s song, “I Dreamed There Was No War”. We listen back with Jem Aswad, a senior editor at Billboard.
“Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community and millions of fans worldwide”.
“I have many wonderful memories of those years and the many miles I travelled with Glenn, filled with laughter, song, parties, hugs and brotherly bonds”.
They formed the band Longbranch Pennywhistle and were writing with Jackson Browne, before Frey and Don Henley met up to play in Linda Ronstadt’s band.
The statement was followed by the lyrics of the band’s song It’s Your World Now, which Frey wrote with Jack Tempchin and has the lyric “It’s your world now”. The Eagles’ band member passed away on Monday due to complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia. We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to LOS ANGELES with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry – and with perseverance, a deep love of music, our alliance with other great musicians and our manager, IRVING AZOFF, we built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed…We brought our two-year “HISTORY OF THE EAGLES TOUR” to a triumphant close at the end of JULY and now he is gone.
In the United States alone, the Eagles had five number one singles and four number one albums, and their greatest hits sold over 30 million copies, a phenomenal achievement. URBAN took to FACEBOOK last NIGHT (1/18) to share his version of the EAGLES classic, “Take It Easy”, on the piano. Frey didn’t care one damn bit how sick and exhausted bassist Randy Meisner was of touring and singing the high notes on Take It To The Limit.
Frey and Henley also became estranged for years, their breach a key reason the band stayed apart in the 1980s. Frey’s “The Heat Is On” was a hit from the “Beverly Hills Cop” soundtrack, and his “Smuggler’s Blues” inspired a “Miami Vice” episode.
Glenn was the one who invited me to join the Eagles in 1974, and it turned out to be a gift of a lifetime to have spent so many years working side by side with him.
Henley released his own statement following the news of Frey’s death, calling him “the spark plug” to the Eagles and “the man with a plan” and “funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven”.
Their six original albums recorded between 1972 and 1980 contain some of the most timeless and influential tracks in American popular music.
