Bobby Parnell: (Elbow) Headed Back To DL
The Mets placed reliever Bobby Parnell on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis before Tuesday’s game against the Orioles and recalled righthander Logan Verrett from Triple-A Las Vegas. So the team went to him Monday and suggested a trip to the disabled list.
Pittsburgh Pirates’ Sean Rodriguez, left, scores past New York Mets relief pitcher Bobby Parnell on a passed ball during the seventh inning of the baseball game at Citi Field, Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, in New York. In Friday night’s loss, Parnell allowed two runs on three hits, and he didn’t record and out.
The veteran right-hander has struggled since returning from Tommy John surgery, which he had done after suffering an elbow injury on opening day of last season.
With the acquisition of Tyler Clippard prior to the deadline, the Mets solidified the back end of their bullpen.
Parnell gave up four earned runs over two-thirds of an inning this past weekend. The sample size is small for Verrett, but he has pitched well with the Mets this season. Since July 22, he is 0-3 with a 14.14 ERA.
Overall, in 23 appearances this season, Parnell is 1-3 with a 5.59 ERA. Collins said Verrett would get a shot as a late-inning reliever, but he is also stretched out enough that he could be an option as a spot starter.
