Bodies of six children, two adults found in Houston home after standoff
Texas authorities say five children and three adults have been found dead inside a Houston-area home following the arrest of a man who exchanged gunfire with police.
The eight people were found Saturday in the Houston-area house “after a welfare check was conducted on the premises”, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Harris County Sheriff’s deputies were told a man inside the home was wanted on an outstanding warrant, but when they forced their way into the home they were fired upon so retreated and waited for the High Risk Operations Unit to arrive. The standoff lasted until 12:30 a.m., and the unnamed man eventually surrendered to the authorities, as KHOU reports.
He has been charged with capital murder, which could lead to the death penalty if he is convicted.
The motive for the killings was not known, and police did not state the victims’ ages or their relationships to each other and to the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody after members of the Harris County Sheriff’s Workplace Excessive Danger Operations Unit and Hostage Negotiation Staff negotiated his give up. By late Sunday morning, authorities had begun removing bodies from the home.
