Boehner to resign from Congress, pressured by the right
Newt Gingrich was the last House speaker to resign office, after being warned of an attempted coup involving Boehner, who was then chairman of the House Republican Conference; drawing an ethics violation and a poor showing for the party in the 1998 congressional election.
Members of the group wanted GOP leadership to back a plan to defund Planned Parenthood that was nearly certain to result in a government shutdown.
Many count Boehner’s resignation as a victory. Boehner rammed through unpopular temporary funding bills three times.
“Listen, it was never about the vote, all right?” “(However) I know how hard is to be caught between factions of your party”, Regula said.
“He says there’s been a ground swell among the GOP base that Boehner’s leadership in the House has not been effective”. The move came a day after Pope Francis made a historic speech to Congress at Boehner’s request.
“Who am I to pray for the pope?”
“I wish he would’ve not run again”, Oliver said. Not only from his powerful leadership position, but from Congress! One, I think him for his service.
Lucas and Cole, the two senior members of Oklahoma’s five-person delegation in the House, expect to support Rep. Kevin McCarthy, of California, to succeed Boehner. Michael Hall, of Trenton, said “good” about Boehner’s resignation.
Trade policy analyst Bill Watson from think-tank Cato Institute said if the next Speaker turns out to be Mr McCarthy, he, too, “has a history of supporting trade agreements”.
On one side were the Boehner defenders, who lashed out at their fellow Republicans. Costa also believes McCarthy is a likely choice, but notes, “He’s got the inside track but I think the very extreme conservative wing will attempt to mount a challenge”.
“He doesn’t view it as moderate versus tea party”.
“The question becomes what happens post-Halloween and who the new speaker is going to be”, said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors in New York.
According to Politico, a visibly emotional Boehner told reporters upon exiting his Friday morning meeting that “this is a wonderful day”.
With his unnatural-looking tan, relaxed and sociable demeanor, love of golf and well-known tendency to cry in public, Boehner was widely popular among House Republicans.
“Now we’ve got to keep it”. The House has passed over 300 bills, the Senate only about 44 of those.
At least in the near term, that appears unlikely, as conservatives reportedly received the news with applause. That means Congress will have to extend the government’s borrowing authority or face a first-ever federal default.
“Being from this area of course I did”, she said.
