Boko Haram claims attack on Shia procession in Nigeria
At least 21 people were initially reported killed, but the toll rose after one more person was confirmed dead. “Right now, we have over two million internally displaced persons, most of whom are women and children, and most of the children are orphans”.
Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, says the incident is another dark patch on the state’s political history.
Boko Haram overtook ISIS to become the world’s deadliest terror group a year ago, responsible for 6,644 deaths in 2014, according to the Global Terrorism Index, a report released earlier this month.
The group considers all who do not follow its strict ideology as infidels, whether they are Christian or Muslim.
The attack occurred in Chiromawa, a village roughly 50 kilometers from the northwestern city of Kano.
No group claimed responsibility for the attacks, but they are in line with others launched by Nigeria’s Boko Haram extremists.
On Friday, a bomber detonated his explosives among a crowd of Shia Muslims participating in a march organized by followers of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Dakasoye village south of Kano, the capital of the province with the same name.
This is not the first time that Boko Haram, which claims membership of Sunni, the major Islamic sect in the country, would attack the Shiites.
Acting Director, army public relations, Sani Kukasheka Usman, revealed on Wednesday that the Nigeria Police, Borno State Command, also arrested another Boko Haram kingpin, Mohammed Usman, at Abuja Talakawa Ward of Maiduguri metropolis, Borno state.
Boko Harm condemns Shias as heretics who should be killed.
“What happened recently in France had a profound effect on all of us, but very few countries realize that Nigeria has suffered terrorist casualties of over 10,000 killed in the last six years”, the statement said.
