Boko Haram kills at least 80 in multiple attacks on Nigeria
Victims of a Boko Haram attack receive treatment at a hospital, in Maiduguri, Nigeria on Monday. Human rights groups allege that Nigeria’s military has killed thousands of detainees at this location.
While 30 persons were killed in Madagali, 20 went down in Maiduguri.
Nigeria’s Information Minister has insisted that the country’s military has largely defeated the Boko Haram insurgency plaguing the country for years. He said one member of the watch committee was lightly wounded.
Their offense was made up of multiple attacks at four southwestern entry points to the city. “The Army has been able to decimate them as they have been decapitated and lack the capacity to launch the kind of attacks they used to launch before”, Mr Mohammed said.
He, however, said the number of casualties was yet to be verified.
“Two female suicide bombers struck at a garage in Madagali and detonated their devices and we lost some beloved country men”, Ezugwu said.
At least 50 people were killed.
AFP reported that hundreds of Kimba residents fled to a refugee camp in Biu nearby, which is already packed with people who have fled Boko Haram.
It further disclosed that the President’s clarity of objective also manifested in the choice of the service chiefs all of whom are said to enjoy huge respect and goodwill among officers and men of the respective services. The attacks have displaced over 1.5 million people. When we glamorise the attacks, it gives the terrorists more life and in a time of insurgency like this, the media also has a role to play, which is not to glamorize the attacks.
He said the diversionary attacks were at Alidawari and Jiddari Polo areas on Sunday evening. The terrorists opened fire on the residents as they set fire to the homes. Soldiers acted promptly to prevent an incursion into Maiduguri, but many were said to have been killed.
Maiduguri is the birthplace of Boko Haram, which emerged as a much more radical entity after Nigerian security forces in 2009 launched an all-out assault on its compound in the city, killing 700 people. A soldier who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to talk to reporters said troops fired against the militants who were firing rocket-propelled grenades and many people were caught in the crossfire.
“The suicide bomber blended with the crowd and detonated her explosives”, explained a Kushari resident who wished to remain anonymous for fear of Boko Haram reprisals.
“Consequently, the troops laid ambush on the terrorists suspected routes along Damboa road and eliminated them”. Three young female suicide bombers tore through the city, hitting a major marketplace and a military checkpoint. “However, it is important to maintain more vigilance and security consciousness”.
A group, Concerned Professionals’ Congress (CPC) has said that the success recorded by President Muhammadu Buhari in the fight against Boko Haram was due to his sincerity and clarity of objective. “It is for us in Nigeria today as civilians to also own the war and supply the missing link”, he said.
