Bombs Target New Mexico Churches
Explosions at two New Mexico churches were reported Sunday morning. At nearby Holy Cross church, a trash can blew up, and windows shattered. “Calvary continues to pray for our community and watch for any opportunity God may give us to serve and help Las Cruces in the days and months ahead”.
A Las Cruces police spokesman says explosions outside two churches “had the potential” to cause serious injury.
No arrests have been made. “We’re still operating and having services”, said Calvary associate pastor Scott Rodgers. He searched the scriptures and was led to the story of David and Goliath. The explosive device there was placed in a trash can.
The bombs were detonated 20 minutes apart on Sunday morning.
The first growth taken place at Calvary Baptist Church plus the watch were usually posted at around 4:20 a.m. An mind-blowing tool injured a inbox, situated near a fence near your executive opening of a congregation. Liturgies were canceled for the rest of the day at both churches, which are less than four miles apart.
“I thought the worst”, Anderson told KTSM. “It didn’t know if it was a shotgun blast, I didn’t know what. I’ve never heard or really been in a place where a bomb has gone off, but is the loudest sound that I’ve heard inside of a building”, said Holy Cross Monsignor John Anderson.
Authorities are working to determine who planted the explosives and whether the blasts were related.
“That’s definitely part of the investigation (but) it’s too premature to make any conclusions,” Fisher said. Churchgoers said they won’t be scared away. But he said there was no immediate indication of a connection.
“We are still in early stages, but making progress”, Fisher said. “These were strong devices”. Police are advising them to look out for anything suspicious, but don’t inspect anything themselves.
Governor Susana Martinez and members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation have all made statements condemning the bombings, and have said such acts of violence will not be tolerated. “If your intention was to bring fear to those who worship, you have failed”.
