Boris Johnson appointed British foreign minister
Johnson was expected to vie for leadership of the Conservative Party then, but ended up backing out when he was suddenly betrayed by his close ally Michael Gove.
Meanwhile, she made sure that negotiations with Europe will be handled not by the Foreign Secretary but by Mr David Davis, a seasoned politician and former diplomat who now acquires the unusual title of Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union. “He lied a lot to the British people”, Ayrault told Radio Europe 1. “It’s a big nation that will take over a big portion of burden from Europe”, he said.
But the appointment, greeted with a mixture of amusement and disbelief in other European capitals, may turn out to be a shrewd political move. Critics said Britain appears to be taking further steps to disengage from the world.
The criticism from the usually buttoned-down Ayrault is nearly without precedent in the discreet world of European diplomacy, where top leaders typically attack one another’s policies, not their characters.
Wikileaks tweeted an extract from the document hours after Johnson was named as Foreign Secretary in Theresa May’s Cabinet reshuffle.
Technically, Mrs May could have simply ignored Mr Johnson, who has no government experience.
A top aide for European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker hurried to describe the possibility of a Johnson premiership as a “horror scenario”.
EU leaders including European Council President Donald Tusk condemned Johnson’s comparison during the campaign of the EU’s goals with those of Hitler and Napoleon.
Johnson disappeared from public view in the days after the referendum and instead played cricket at a friend’s country estate.
In their first telephone conversation, Kerry offered his congratulations to newly appointed Johnson in the top British diplomatic post.
The man at the centre of the storm said on Thursday that given the referendum result, it was inevitable that there would be “plaster coming off the ceiling in the chancelleries of Europe”.
“I am not at all anxious about Boris Johnson, but. during the campaign he lied a lot to the British people and now it is he who has his back to the wall”, Ayrault told Europe 1 radio.
Governments around the globe have reacted to Boris Johnson’s appointment as United Kingdom foreign secretary. The two will meet Monday in Brussels.
Johnson had hoped to become British prime minister but saw his dream fade amid last month’s vote in the Conservative Party.
In fact, Johnson’s only reason for supporting Clinton was because he wanted her husband back in the White House.
He’s insulted everyone from the president of the United States to the people of Papua New Guinea.
Some argue that Johnson’s undiplomatic character might be exactly what could be needed to reposition Britain outside of the European Union. But Britain is now a special case. And previous year he said: “The only reason I wouldn’t visit some parts of NY is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump”.
But it also said May had appointed him “to heal the party and to show the voters. that she takes the referendum outcome seriously”.
