Boris Johnson favorite to replace Cameron after Brexit victory
Boris Johnson has attempted to reassure Remain voters the United Kingdom won’t go down a path of isolationism now it has voted to leave the European Union.
He praised the Prime Minister’s “own brand of compassionate conservatism” and hailed his “bravery” at allowing the U.K.to vote on its membership of the EU.
His father was a member of the European Parliament and Johnson spent many of his formative years in Brussels.
I want to reassure everybody this nation will continue to be a great European power. “Any delay would unnecessarily prolong uncertainty”. Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron announced Fr.
Now that the U.K.’s voters have chose to leave the European Union, what happens next?
Tusk told reporters that Britain’s 27 partners were “determined to keep our unity”. Cameron resigned Friday following a surprise vote in favor of the Leave campaign, which triumphed by 52 percent over the Remain campaign’s 48 percent. But, he said, “there’s no way of predicting all the political consequences of this event”.
He said that by October, there should be a new leader of the Conservative Party in place, thus triggering a leadership race.
Leaving the European Union would allow the U.K.to “find our voice in the world again, a voice that is commensurate with the fifth-biggest economy on earth-powerful, liberal, humane, an extraordinary force for good in the world”, said Johnson. He drew criticism from his Conservative colleagues when he said that a “leave” vote would require the government to push through an emergency budget to raise 30 billion pounds (about $41,048,700,000) for a hole that would result from a hit to the economy.
Once its intentions are officially notified, Britain would have two years to officially negotiate its departure, although London could be granted an extension if all 27 European Union member states agree.
“There can not be any special treatment for the United Kingdom”. “T$3 he will of the British people is an instruction which must be delivered”.
Britain, he said, will continue to have a strong voice in global affairs as an economic powerhouse and a compassionate and open-minded nation: “To those who may be anxious, whether at home or overseas, this does not mean that the United Kingdom will be in any way less united, nor indeed does it mean that it will be any less European.that this decision involves pulling up a drawbridge or some sort of isolationism – I think the opposite is true”.
He insisted that the exit negotiations “should be concluded within two years”. Gove – or “Gover”, has Johnson calls him – was one of the key figures in the “leave” camp.
The possibility to leave exists in the EU’s rule book, but it’s never been used before.
At four to one odds, Ladbrokes had given Remain a 90% certainty.
