Boston places CF Betts on 7-day concussion DL
During his press conference, an understandably emotional Victorino broke down in tears when talking about his love for his teammates, as well as when he mentioned he’d have to change his walk-up song “Three Little Birds”, which turned into an anthem for Red Sox Nation at Fenway Park. “You don’t want to think about it”, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of his club’s recent good fortune. If that happens, he will be of interest to those of you in mixed leagues that need runs or steals.
With a runner on first, Jose Abreu smashed a Miley first-pitch fastball to right-center field.
Samardzija (7-5, 3.91 ERA) hasn’t pitched against the Red Sox since 2012, though their top two offseason signings – Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval – faced him when he was with the Cubs and they were in the NL.
“The way these guys have been playing behind us pitchers – not only the runs, but the defense, it’s been outstanding”, he said. “We’ll get to know him better”.
In the final year of a three-year $39 million contract, Victorino was nothing more than dead weight for Boston.
While Betts was checked on by trainers and eventually removed from the game, the umpires reviewed the play, ultimately ruling the play a two-run homer for Abreu. Betts attempted an abbreviated leap to slow his momentum as he went into the short wall, but it instead carried him up and over the bullpen, flipping the center fielder over in the process. He fell backwards and landed hard on his shoulders and head, and was immediately taken to the Boston clubhouse for concussion tests. Betts left the game.
Farrell confirmed after the team’s 9-4 loss that Betts has “symptoms consistent with a concussion”, but could offer no further update.
“The replay shows obviously the ball dislodging”, Farrell said. “In establishing the validity of the catch, the fielder shall hold the ball long enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball and that his release of the ball is voluntary and intentional”. “That’s the bottom line”.
One of his biggest moments was in the 1999 All Star Game – in Fenway, no less – when he started and struck out five of the six NL hitters he faced.
The White Sox jumped ahead 4-0 in the first, scoring three before making an out.
Then came the parade: A Tyler Saladino walk.
Kelly was clearly trying to find the reins on his fastball, but he couldn’t do it against Jose Abreu.
New York Mets manager Terry Collins (10) and the Mets Juan Uribe (2), who joined the team Saturday after a trade, celebrate after Uribe hit a tenth-inning, walk-off single to lift the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles… It’s never fun being part of anything like that.
