Boston Red Sox hired Dave Dombrowski as president of baseball operations; Ben
The veteran baseball executive has joined the Red Sox as president of baseball operations, the team announced Tuesday night.
The team said Dave Dombrowski has been named President of Baseball Operations.
Dombrowski said he was offered a number of other jobs within baseball, but the Red Sox job was always his top option.
Dombrowski was the GM of the Tigers until he and the team parted ways earlier this month. Henry lauded Dombrowski’s arrival in a press release. Although I did have other potential options within baseball, there was no option that stood out as clearly as the chance to come to Boston and win with the Red Sox.
The move comes during a season filled with change for the last-place Red Sox. “Boston is a baseball city like no other and its history and traditions are unique in our game”.
Again, for those with nightmares of Melvin Upton, while Wren would be occupying the same position as Cherington, his role would not be the same, with Dombrowski captaining the ship.
Dombrowski, who was unemployed for a total of 14 days, not only inherits an ownership group with the willingness to spend – like he had in Detroit – but also a healthy farm system, built up by Cherington. The Red Sox won three World Series titles while Cherington was with the organization, including the championship in 2013 while he was general manager. “We appreciate his many years of service, his substantial contributions to our organization over many years, and his willingness to assist Dave with the transition”.
