Botched Fake FG sums up UConn-Mizzou
The Tigers’ offensive issues might prove costly in the win-loss column.
The Huskies (2-1) lined up to attempt a 42-yard field goal on 4th-and-4 to tie with Bobby Puyol, but holder and backup quarterback Tim Boyle took the snap, dropped back and threw downfield for a tight end.
In UConn’s last game, the Huskies gave up 10 tackles for loss including three on consecutive plays spread out over two drives by Army linebacker Andrew King. Mizzou has never lost to the Wildcats since entering the SEC in 2012. The Tigers started out the scoring on a safety after a botched punt attempt. He’s 2-0 as a starting quarterback, and is 31 of 49 passing for 472 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Trailing, 6-2, at halftime with only 114 total yards, Missouri gained 134 yards and its only touchdown of the game in the third quarter. Mizzou overcame a 15-yard chop block penalty on guard Taylor Chappell that pushed the offense out of the red zone, but Mauk came right back with a 20-yard pass to tailback Ish Witter on the run.
The Tigers came to life offensively, just long enough to eke out the win.
Offensive line coach Mike Cummings has been down this road before and dealing with Missouri’s talented and physical front seven is likely going to be pretty high on the to-do list for the UConn offense this week.
Key stat: Missouri’s opening drive of the second half went 68 yards in 15 plays and took 6:43 off the game clock. “This week was my week, I guess”. And it would have been 6-5 had the Tigers not missed a field goal.
He leads the Huskies in rushing, by the way. Missouri even punted from the UConn 35-yard line in the fourth quarter.
After trading punts a few times, the Huskies began with the ball. He completed 17/26 passes for 156 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, good for a 115.8 passer efficiency rating. He had no touchdowns, but 33 yards, on thirteen carries.
