Bourbon Street Mass Shooting Kills One And Injuries Nine
Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said violence like Sunday’s mass shooting on Bourbon Street in New Orleans threatens to destroy Louisiana’s $11.5 billion industry he oversees.
A 24-year-old man from Baton Rouge and a 37-year-old man from Zachary were two of the surviving victims. Two were women and the others were men.
Around 30 officers were rushed to the scene following the shooting.
Police arrested two men at the scene for illegally carrying of weapons. “We will pursue this investigation aggressively”, he wrote.
Twelve people, including one of those shot, were arrested in the French Quarter on Saturday and Sunday and charged with illegal possession of a firearm, police said.
Nungesser said something needs to be done to ensure New Orleans keeps attracting tourists.
Monday morning, Ramsey met with business leaders to discuss what steps should be taken in the wake of the shooting. They do not yet have a motive for the shooting. He was shot in the chest and in the shoulder, a spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department said. One arrest was unrelated to the shooting.
Investigators continued searching Sunday night for the suspects, who fled on foot.
The shooting happened just after 1:30 a.m.in the 100 block of Bourbon St.
Five of the injured victims have been released from the hospital and four remained hospitalized – but officials say they do not have life-threatening injuries. CNN reported that officers heard shots and immediately headed toward the scene.
“What I would say to the community is if you want a safe community you’ve got to step up to the plate”, said Landrieu. Everyone was running, she said.
“We had a robust presence of police officers”.
